On Feb. 27, 2026, BLACKPINK released its new five-track mini-album “DEADLINE.” Many fans were beyond excited, as it was the group’s first project together since 2022, when members Kim Jisoo (JISOO), Lalisa Manobal (LISA), Kim Jennie (JENNIE) and Roseanne Park (ROSÉ) decided not to renew their individual contracts with YG Entertainment, instead focusing on their solo careers. To celebrate BLACKPINK’s comeback, Seoul landmarks such as Namsan Tower and Banpo Bridge were lit up pink, and billboards broadcast the music video across South Korea.
The EP overall was brave – the included songs pushed enough boundaries to risk ruining its commercial success, which is part of the reason “DEADLINE” is a win for BLACKPINK. They made art that was authentically BLACKPINK, and didn’t censor their thoughts or language, which made the EP more relatable and therefore boosted reception and impact.
The first song on the track, “JUMP,” was introduced on the DEADLINE World Tour in 2025 and is a pre-release single for “DEADLINE.” Being a hybrid between Eurodance and EDM, “JUMP” is the perfect song for getting ready with the girls before a night out. It encourages everyone to take to the dance floor and jump, celebrating a sense of freedom and fun. Directed by Dave Meyers, the music video for “JUMP” spotlights the members and ecstatic fans dancing through the Eunpyeong-gu district of Seoul.
“GO,” the second song on the track, combines pop, rock, EDM and hip-hop to produce one of the most energetic and unique songs BLACKPINK has released. With a liquid-silver aesthetic, this song certainly highlights BLACKPINK’s versatility, both in music genres and production: It marks a significant milestone where Jisoo, Lisa, Rosé and Jennie all contributed to songwriting. The song was co-written by Chris Martin from Coldplay, along with Danny Chung, and producers Cirkut and Teddy. “GO” is the standout song from “DEADLINE,” but is closely followed by “JUMP” due to the single’s catchy nature. The “GO” music video mixes nautical, intergalactic and dance-world themes, with masked backup dancers rowing on a planet’s rings and BLACKPINK members strapping into sleeping containers on a spaceship.
The smooth R&B track “Me and my” stands out with a more laid-back vibe in contrast to the EP’s higher-energy songs like “GO.” Unfortunately, unfair line distribution gives Lisa 54 lines, while Jisoo and Rosé tie for last with only nine lines. Many fans commented that it seemed more like a solo than a group project. Overall, “Me and my” seemed a little lackluster compared to the other songs on “DEADLINE.” Fans were also skeptical of the song credits – Dr. Luke was invited as a studio producer, despite being accused of sexual misconduct by Ke$ha, P!nk and Kelly Clarkson.
However, the next song, “Champion,” is the ultimate track for any competition; it’s a shame “DEADLINE” hadn’t been released earlier, because if it had, it would have certainly played at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. The electric guitar riff and synth bassline complement the vocals perfectly, making “Champion” a song for athletes. Its lyrics convey a message of determination and resilience, something Jisoo, Rosé, Jennie and Lisa learned together as they grew from trainees to group members.
Finally, flipping expectations plus taking control: “Fxxxboy” is THE song to listen to in the aftermath of a toxic relationship. In “Tally” from “BORN PINK,” the last album released before “DEADLINE,” Jennie sang, “Sometimes, I like to play dirty / Just like all the fxxx boys do.” Now, the members are continuing the motif, owning the role – a bold (and somewhat risky) move that shows their confidence and growth. “Fxxxboy” is the song that has fans convinced that the group’s hiatus was worth it – Rosé, Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa’s heavenly vocals perfectly complement the harsher, more blunt lyrics.
All in all, even though not every track lands quite as intended, “DEADLINE” is a resounding success, showing that BLACKPINK is back stronger than ever. The time the group members have taken to develop their artistry shines through, making their reunion EP absolutely worth a listen.
