Running to State: Track and Field Preview

It’s that time of year again: track and field season. The Dougherty Valley track and field athletes are lacing up their spikes and getting ready for yet another great season. The Wildcats have spent the last couple of months conditioning and weight lifting to better prepare for this upcoming season.

Last season, the Wildcats beat Dublin in the dual meet they had against the Gaels. The Wildcats had quite a few runners make it to NCS last season. James Spencer, Michelle Thompson, and Neil Braganza all got to run last year competed in the Meet of Champions.

Coach Chamberlain says, “I am most looking forward to the improvement of the team overall and the individual athletes. I’m excited to watch the kids compete and improve.”

Coach Chamberlain also informed us of the team’s biggest strengths. He mentioned that, “The kids on the team get really close and they can become really good friends. Another strength is the amount of work that everyone is willing to put in.”

Lastly, Coach Chamberlain said to keep an eye out for sprinters Kristen Glavee, and James Spencer and Katie O Malley. Also, watch out for hurdler Michelle Thompson, and distance runners Helen Guo and Neal Braganza.”

Senior James Spencer, who holds the school record time for the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash and the 4×400, is most looking forward to making state.

He said, “Making state has always been my dream and it can be a reality this year.”

According to Spencer, Miramonte will probably be the toughest opponent this season because they have a solid lineup with some great runners.

Senior Anna Marie Nimene, who competes in the shot put and discus field events, says that she’s excited to see herself and her teammates improve this season. She says that she is most looking forward to supporting her teammates and having fun this season.

The Wildcats have their first meet coming up on Saturday, February 28th. It is called the Super 7 Invite. It will be held at De La Salle High School, so be sure to support your fellow WIldcats.
