DVHS Women’s Tennis continues its great season with wins against Monte Vista 6-3 and Cal 6-3 through a consistent and resilient mental game.
Women’s Tennis played an away game against Monte Vista on Sept. 24.
Senior co-captain Mahek Karamchandani and junior Shweta Srinivasan won their doubles match 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). They attributed their win to a strong mental game.
“We got the first set pretty easily, but the second we started getting nervous; we weren’t playing our game, we were playing our opponents’ game,” Srinivasan explained. “But we were able to tie it up and make it six-all and win in the end.”
Senior co-captain Jasmine Lam, however, struggled a bit with her mental game as she lost 1-6, 6-7 (6-8).
“I came in really nervous because I knew the girl was a really good player so I think I could improve on my mental but also improve on making less unforced errors,” Lam said.
Lam and her team bettered their mental game and displayed a great deal of consistency as the Wildcats defeated Cal High 6-3 at home on Sept. 26.
Lam explained how in this match her serves were much better and she was “hitting with more pace.” Lam won her match 6-0, 6-1.
Lam’s co-captain senior Jahnavi Reddy struggled with leg cramps during her match and as a result lost 2-6, 1-6.
“My playing was the normal thing its just having your legs cramped you can’t really run.
I mean I tried to my best capabilities and I ran to each ball even though it hurt,” Reddy explained.
Though Reddy was not able to play her best, her teammate, junior Smitha Chandrasekhar, cruised past her opponent 6-0, 6-0.
“I think I did well in not letting her get the ball back into play,” Chandrasekhar explained.
Overall, the team displayed the same strength they have been playing with for the season. The team has maintained a 6-1 record this season and by the looks of their strong mental game and consistent rallies, they will continue to succeed.
“I think this season we’re really killing it. Everyone is really happy and our match play is getting better. We’re motivated to win,” Lam said.
Reddy echoed her co-captain’s sentiments: “I’m really excited to see how we can move forward this year. I think we can make states.”
