Many students take for granted all the benefits that DVHS provides. It’s common to hear students complain about the academic culture at DVHS and the stress it may cause. But by taking an objective look at our school, we can find countless reasons to feel proud of and appreciative of what our school offers. With state-of-the-art facilities, a rigorous academic culture that builds resilience, and impressive college placement statistics, DVHS stands out as a place that not only educates but also empowers.
One of the most visible advantages at DVHS is its clean, high-quality facilities. Whether you’re in the classroom, on the field, or in the gym, the school’s commitment to maintaining a professional and functional environment is clear. Just this year, our dance room and gymnasium have received new floors. We have also installed a multitude of automatic doors this year, improving the accessibility of our campus.
The classrooms are well-equipped with technology and resources that make learning engaging and effective. One-to-One devices are provided for students, and the athletic facilities are top-notch, supporting both competitive and recreational athletes. These facilities don’t just provide a comfortable environment; they create a space where students can pursue their passions, whether academic or athletic, wi thout limits.
Academically, DVHS has a reputation for being a high-pressure environment. While this may sound intimidating, the school’s rigor pushes students to develop discipline, time management, and resilience—skills essential for success beyond high school. Our emphasis on academic achievement encourages students to reach their potential, and many come to appreciate the challenge.
However, DVHS also recognizes that a rigorous curriculum isn’t for everyone, and the school provides flexibility for students to adjust their schedules. If the academic demands become too much to bear, students are encouraged to explore a range of courses, allowing them to create a balance that best suits their goals and well-being. For the first month of schooling, students are encouraged to drop difficult weighted classes if the workloads prove too stressful. If they do, students can leave the class with no impact on their transcripts.
Dougherty’s dedication to mental health is evident in DVHS’s wellness center, which invites students to take a break during the hustle and bustle of school. We also have destress fests where dogs, llamas, and more have come onto campus to ease students’ minds.
Finally, DVHS students should feel proud of the school’s success in college admissions. As the high school with the most UC applications globally, DVHS demonstrates its ability to inspire students to aim high and achieve big. The school’s rigorous preparation helps graduates gain acceptance to competitive universities, opening doors to opportunities that can shape their future. The faculty and counseling departments work tirelessly to support students in their college applications, providing guidance and resources to make the process as seamless as possible.
At DVHS, students are given opportunities, support, and resources that not every high school offers. From outstanding facilities to a balanced approach to academic rigor and college preparation, our school gives us much to appreciate. Instead of seeing the pressure and expectations as obstacles, we should view them as challenges that help us grow and succeed.
