On Sept. 3, 2024, DV’s women’s varsity golf team won 199-254 against SRVHS in their first game of the season at the Crow Canyon Golf Club.
The first round concluded with Michelle Ho scoring 32 and Chloe Ku scoring 36. Both the players swung with all the power they had to reach the goal. As they approached different goals it became more difficult. This was a great start to the game, giving confidence to the rest of the team to perform well in the next two rounds.
Although Ho and Ku did well, they felt they still had room for improvement.
“Cutting needs a lot of improvement because the greens were punched, and we should try to reach the goal in fewer shots,” Ho mentioned. The holes in the greens were deeper, making it more difficult to score a goal in fewer shots.
Even though the second round wasn’t as successful as the first, as the score was around 120, it greatly contributed to the game.
Since the greens were punched deeper, the slightest touch to the golf ball would lead to the ball going over the goal. This was a struggle since DV’s points increased and it wasn’t what they had expected. As they didn’t exceed more than 80 points, DV was expected to win the game with the lead they maintained.
The two golfers in the second round expressed their disappointment because of the overwhelming amount of shots they needed to get the ball into the hole. Yet, they held their positive attitude and continued to hope for the best for the final round.
“It’s been a great game–the girls are playing really well. Even when they’re not, they’re being very positive [and have been] keeping their heads up; it’s great to see,” Coach Anthony Bellizzi said.
The third and final round was a great finish to the game. Even though there were times when the golf ball would be outside of the green or it would take an abnormal amount of shots to get the ball into the hole, everyone was proud to complete their first game successfully with a win. The Wildcats finished their last holes for the third round, defeating SRVHS 199-254. Ho was recognized for receiving the lowest score of 32, securing her recognition as a medalist.
Their first win was a great start to the season for the women’s varsity golf season. The team expects to get better as the season goes on, and has high expectations as they await their season ahead of them.
“I think everybody can just fine-tune little parts of their game. And golf’s very hard, so not giving up is a big step to being a better golf player,” Bellizzi said.
The Wildcats will play their next game on Sept. 5, 2024 against Carondelet.
