During the hubbub of homecoming week, musicians in the DVHS band program practice for the first major performance in the year: The Fall Concert. This concert will be performed by the Jazz Band, Symphonic Band 1 and Wind Ensemble on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

Why is the Fall Concert different than the other concerts?

Band Director Ms. Musiel claims, “It’s obviously our first big [concert] of the year, where we play our legit music from class. And it’s different from Pep Band and other things because … this is just the upper classes, like Symphonic 1, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, so it’s kind of the more advanced students that get prepared for it.”

Although the bands are preparing for the concert, how smoothly the concert will run is a big question that every musician must answer. Each band was given one piece at the beginning of the school year and one piece a week before the concert week.

“There are always moments that are really difficult,” Musiel states, “But it’s more difficult for the students than for me. I mean, they are the ones that are producing all of the music, so it’s challenging for them … There will be some cross-your-fingers moments.”

The band students also have something to say about the matter as well.

Senior Eric Chen flatly states, “We’re not prepared,” while other students, such as Junior Michael Tang, anticipate a great performance.

“I’ve always liked band concerts,” Tang explains, “and another one is three times the fun. No wait, three-halves the fun.”

Musiel also comments on the concert: “I think every class is doing a really fun, kind of recognizable song, so that’s always cool, and then different classes are doing like serious music. Even Jazz Band is going to do a popular tune, so should be a little something for everybody. If you like band music, it should be a good concert.”

The concert will be on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door; it’s free for all students and $5 for the adults. Bring your ID card!
