Dougherty Valley’s varsity women’s golf team is currently dominating the DFAL league after kicking off the season with five consecutive wins.

After defeating Amador Valley in a pre-league match 195-222, the Wildcats opened league matches with a victory over Campolindo 191-301. The team was not daunted by Moraga Country Club’s difficult course. Led by Yoonhee Kim’s score of 35, players impressed with Siobhan Sher’s 38, Janica Ha’s 39, Reini Lin’s 39, Tiffany Cha’s 40 and Clarendon Chow’s 46. The players did not disappoint at the second Campolindo match with a 198-305 win at Blackhawk. The team continued its success: Yoonhee Kim  with a 34, Siobhan Sher with a 40, Tiffany Cha with a 37, Janica Ha with a 44, Reini Lin with a 46, and Clarendon Chow with a 43.

In the Amador Valley Tournament at Poppy Ridge, the team took 2nd place out of 23 teams, 5 strokes behind Dublin in 1st place. Yoonhee Kim’s 71 was followed by Reini Lin’s 74, Tiffany Cha’s 75, Janica Ha’s 84, Amy Xue’s 85 and Siobhan Sher’s 87.

Dougherty Valley beat Miramonte 208-244 at the opponent’s home course, Orinda Country Club. Both Yoonhee Kim and Tiffany Cha led with 39s, followed by Siobhan Sher and Mia Banducci with 43s, Priyam Khemani with a 44 and Janica Ha with a 45. Continuing the winning streak, the team achieved a 192-296 victory in the second match against Alhambra. Siobhan Sher led with a 36, followed closely by Yoonhee Kim’s 37, Reini Lin’s 38, Clarendon Chow’s 39, Tiffany Cha’s 42 and Mia Banducci’s 46.

With the season off to a strong start, the coaches are excited and optimistic to see the team’s potential pay off. The top six players who play in each match rotate based on qualifying scores during practices.

“The difficult job is to fill the top spots when our team is so talented,” remarks head coach Mike Cowan.

Cowan, along with the rest of the team, hopes to repeat their victory at NCS this year.

Assistant coach Micalann Cowan observed that the players are “becom[ing] a team that respects each other and other players.”

The team is “even better and stronger than last year,” believes Assistant coach Pat Hallahan.

Hallahan encourages the players to reach their individual goals to “play up to their potential.” All three coaches share the hope that the team will advance to the state championships this year.

The varsity women’s golf team prepares for the upcoming matches against Dougherty Valley’s rival Dublin on October 8 and 16.

Before then, the team faced Acalanes October 1 and 2 and will face Las Lomas and Alhambra the week of October 6.
