Dicaprio scrutinized for humility during Oscars

Long awaited Oscar recipient Leonardo Dicaprio focused on climate change in his speech at the famous awards, stirring up a batch of unhappy fans proclaiming instead that Dicaprio’s topic should have been his journey and accomplishments as an actor.

As talented as Dicaprio seemed in the eyes of fans, several of his “supporters” criticized the famed actor for choosing to talk about the world and the threat of global warming. After expressing his gratitude for family, friends and the crew of “The Revenant”, Dicaprio chose to convey awareness about climate change and its threat to the planet, his humility scorned by fans and actors such as “Clueless” star Stacey Dash.

In a recent interview, Dash proclaimed, “He reminds me of Chicken Little, the foolish bird who ran around her neighborhood and disturbed everyone”(US Weekly). Dash continued on to say, “There are people 10 miles from Leo starving, stuck on entitlement. We have 21st century Nazi’s to deal with as well as North Korea playing with nukes. He needs to get his priorities straight”(US Weekly).

While problems like those mentioned by Dash are present, Dicaprio’s humility in the Oscars did not go unnoticed as respect grew towards the famed actor from ongoing fans such as We Teenz UK who tweeted, “Leo’s full Oscar speech is everything right with life!”

That night, Dicaprio was joined by “Mad Max” costume designer Jenny Beavan who supported his awareness for climate change, saying, “I just want to say one quite serious thing, I’ve been thinking about this a lot, but actually it could be horribly prophetic, ‘Mad Max,’ if we’re not kinder to each other, and if we don’t stop polluting our atmosphere, so you know, it could happen”(Variety).

With all biases aside, Dicaprio’s speech made the audience aware of pollution and global warming, as well as reflecting on the consequences from harming the environment. Leo’s speech touched on major environmental concerns.

“Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this” DiCaprio said (Bustle).
