Teacher of Interest: Mrs. Sellers
Everyone knows that administration works very hard to keep up our school. Whether it’s in the office helping students or outside cleaning, every individual has pride in Dougherty Valley. This is especially true of all of the counselors at DV who work with every student that steps foot on campus.
The Tribune had the special opportunity to interview one of the counselors and ask a few questions about why she loves what she does.
Mrs. Sellers worked for five years as a teacher before realizing she wanted to be a counselor for high school students. And aren’t we lucky that Dougherty was able to grab her before anyone else did?
Here are some questions that provide a quick insight as to why we chose her as the faculty member of interest for May.
- What inspired you to become a counselor?
A: I was a teacher at a middle school, but really wanted to work in a high school environment. Because I loved motivating students, I decided to get my Masters in Counseling.
- How did you end up getting a job as a guidance counselor? Was it your primary intent to become one as a child?
A: As a child, I wanted to teach; I felt very fortunate to be hired in SRVUSD. I taught for five years, but was curious what counseling would be like. It’s very different from teaching, but I enjoy learning this part of education.
- What is your favorite part about being a counselor?
A: I love seeing a student overcome a difficult situation whether it’s academic or personal. And when seniors are accepted to colleges that they’ve worked so hard for, it’s really fun to see them so excited and proud and to be a part of that time in their life.
- What do you find most difficult about your job?
A: Exactly the opposite of my favorite part: students who think they aren’t worth something like success or happiness, trying to grow someone’s sense of themselves and when students don’t get accepted to the colleges that they work so hard for … trying to encourage them to stay positive is sometimes hard.
- What are some hobbies you like to do outside of school?
A: I have a young family so my husband and I spend most of our time hanging out with my four-year-old daughter and three-year-old son as much as possible. It’s a lot of work, but really fun.
