Library How-To Guide

The DVHS library houses extremely useful resources for students, as long as visitors follow library protocols. These rules keep the library running consistently and maintain an effective system for students’ use. However, some students may find these processes confusing to follow, so the following is a one-stop shop for library reference.

Printing: Written on the whiteboard in front of library computers, the printing protocol comes to students in 3 easy steps.

  1. Save what you want to print as a PDF. If what you want to print is not already on a document, copy and paste the content onto a Word document to download the PDF.
  2. Borrow one of the red USB flash drives at the circulation desk. Ask for one nicely if you don’t know where they’re hung.
  3. Save the PDF you want to print onto the library flash drive, then plug the USB key into one of the printers. The printer screen will ask you what you want to print, and then print your documents.

A few notes: 1) the printers only print in black and white, and 2) you can only print up to 5 pages at a time.

Computer Log-on: In order to print, you first need to be able to log onto a computer. The network computers available in the library require a district username and password.

Username: dh\firstinitiallastname

Password: Your personally set password

Access Passes: Access passes are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays unless otherwise stated. You can sign one out before school or during brunch; it is on a first-come, first served basis. However, it is advised you get one at the beginning of brunch at the latest, for the library runs out of passes fairly quickly. Be sure to heed the giant “NO ACCESS PERIOD TODAY” sign when it’s put up so you don’t have to ask for a pass that day.

Library Hours: Speaking of signs, if the library closes early or for a break, brightly colored signs will be posted on the front doors specifying when the library will be closed. If there are no signs, normal library hours are 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Fridays, unless otherwise posted.

Textbooks: The textbooks behind the circulation desk are available for checkout in the library. However, they are for in-library use only. If you have an issue regarding class textbooks, including class novels, please see Mrs. Grijalva in the adjoining textbook room.

Finding books: If you’re looking for a specific book, the library books are shelved in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. In the nonfiction section, books are shelved by their call number according to the Dewey Decimal system. If you need help finding a book, ask someone at the circulation desk politely for assistance.

Food and Drink: Eating and drinking are never allowed in the library. If you have an open drink or food you have to bring into the library, set it down on the counter above the book-return slot and pick it up when you exit.

Ultimately, the library is a fun place to explore. Whether you’re searching the stacks, printing an essay, or working on an assignment, the library has a resource for everything. Follow these simple steps to maximize your visit.
