Settle it in Smash: Super Smash Bros for Wii U

On November 21 , Nintendo is releasing one of the most anticipated titles of this generation: Super Smash Bros for Wii U.

After nearly three years of generating hype with trailers, daily screenshots, hours of gameplay footage and numerous public demos, the eight-player competitive party fighting game is ready for release. The most hardcore fans have already been playing the handheld 3DS version for almost two months now and are ready to put that training to use in the new game. Smash Bros for Wii U is actually the first game in the series to be made in 1080p HD, and is playable in 60 frames per second, even with the hectic eight fighters in the mix.

The Smash Bros franchise is one of the most iconic in gaming. It puts Nintendo’s most well known, like Mario and Link against the obscure, such as Palutena from Kid Icarus and Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles. Recently, Nintendo even allowed for third party characters, allowing Megaman, Pacman and even Sonic the Hedgehog into the fray. A total of 56 unique characters are playable, with more anticipated via downloadable content.

The game is universally known as a “Nintendo System seller”, and many players buy gaming systems just to play the game. Nintendo is relying on Smash Bros to sell their newest home console, the Wii U. Every entry in the game sells incredibly well. The 3DS version alone has sold over one million copies in less than two months. Super Smash Bros Melee sold 4.06 million copies overall.

I got the chance to play the game in an event at GameStop on November 14. The game is incredibly fluid, and looks amazing. I played as Link, who was a perfect recreation from the 3DS version. Matches were incredibly quick, and easier to follow than the 3DS version. The stage had an incredible sense of scale, and it felt so much more grand. Although the game was hectic, it was still extremely smooth.

Smash Bros for Wii U can be played with literally every Nintendo controller made since 2002. It supports a ridiculous number of controllers: a grand total of eight unique controller options. With the GameCube controller adapter for Wii U, competitive players will not be alienated. The wide variety of controller support will be more than useful for the anticipated eight-player smash game mode which is exclusive to the Wii U version.

Nintendo is giving multiple reasons to buy the new Wii U version. Fans who buy both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game will gain access to returning fighter Mewtwo, available in the spring of next year. If both versions are registered on their Club Nintendo website, Nintendo is offering the soundtrack for free. Also, the 3DS system can be used as a controller for the Wii U version, much to the relief of those without enough controllers.

Also a first for Nintendo is their new toy line: Amiibo. The Amiibo function similar to other video game toys, such as Skylanders or Disney Infinity. Through the use of NFC(near force connection), players can transport their figurines into the game. In Smash Bros, the Amiibo act as training partners. Players will train their own character, as the Amiibo will replicate and counter the owner’s playstyle. The first wave of Amiibos launch with Smash Bros for Wii U on November 21.

With an extreme amount of content, as well as a toyline and competitive scene, players have been eagerly awaiting to settle it in Smash.
